Online Trends: Is It Really Necessary?

Almost everything in this world is ruled by social media and its trends. A TikTok video goes viral, and we can bet you’ll come across it or its variations at least a dozen times in the same week. Ironically, one trending topic was “social trends meaning”; another term you will almost always see trending is “social trends examples”. The main purpose of following these trends is to keep your brand relevant in this digital-first world, but is it worth it?

The question that’s nagging us is: to follow or not to follow the current TikTok trends? While trends can propel your brand to new heights, they can also lead to pitfalls if not managed correctly. Here are a few factors that determine whether your brand needs to engage with online trends:

1. Target Audience

It’s crucial to understand the demographics and behavior patterns of your audience. Consider whether your target audience is trend-sensitive and if their interests align with the trends you want to use for your brand. A trend that resonates with a younger audience may not have the same impact on an older demographic.

2. Brand Identity and Values

Maintaining consistency in your brand’s identity and values is paramount. A brand should only jump on a trend when the social media trend aligns with its core values and messaging. A slight deviation can lead to a mismatch that might confuse or alienate your audience. A slight mishap can cause backlash, potentially resulting in a significant loss of followers and a tarnished reputation.

3. Competitor Actions

Not everyone will tell you this, but keeping an eye on your competitors is essential! Don’t copy—just observe. Monitoring competitor ads and their approaches to trends can provide valuable insights into what works and what doesn’t. Identify gaps and opportunities in the market that your competitors might have missed. If the answer is yes, add your brand’s unique twist to it and post away! This way, you can leverage the trend while differentiating yourself from the competition.

4. Cultural Relevance

Demographics matter significantly when it comes to trend adoption. Certain trends may not resonate well with the audience in the region where your company is based. What’s popular in one country might be completely irrelevant or even offensive in another. It’s crucial to ensure that your audience gets the message without making it too complicated or culturally inappropriate.

5. Strategic Timing

Timing is everything in the world of trends. Joining a trend too late can make your brand appear out-of-touch, while jumping in too early might leave your audience confused. Utilize social listening tools to monitor emerging trends and gauge their potential impact.

All in all, there are many considerations to keep in mind when it comes to online trends. Always ask yourself these questions before involving your brand:

  • Will my target audience resonate with it?
  • Is my content in sync with the trend, or am I forcing it?
  • Are my competitors also hopping on this trend? (Again, don’t imitate, just observe.)
  • Is this trend culturally relevant based on my target audience’s demographics and behavior patterns?
  • Is my content engaging and adding value to the trend?
  • Am I strategically timing my participation in this trend?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then go for it! Digital marketing trends can make your brand stand out if done efficiently. However, it is crucial to know what’s good for your brand and what’s not – a small mistake can cause damages that may cost time and money.
